Sulfo-NHS-LC-Biotin, Sulfosuccinimidyl 6-(biotinamido) Hexanoate, is a long chain, water soluble biotinylation reagent that is reactive toward primary amine groups. Similar to Sulfo-NHS-Biotin, Sulfo-NHS-LC-Biotin is designed to target cell surface proteins. The sodium sulfonate groups lend water solubility to Sulfo-NHS-LC-Biotin and prevent it from crossing the lipid bi-layer of the cell membrane; whereas NHS-LC-Biotin can biotinylate intracellular proteins. The resulting biotinylated protein can then be detected when used in conjunction with streptavidin and Immobilized Streptavidin.
The "long chain" Sulfo-NHS-LC-Biotin and Sulfo-NHS-Biotin both have the same chemical functionality. However, Sulfo-NHS-LC-Biotin will provide a longer spacer arm that is designed to overcome any steric hindrances that may be present between the labeled protein(s) and streptavidin (ProteoChem product # e7105-5mg). Often, the best results are determined by empirically testing each reagent for your specific application.
